2007 UCI World Cup # 2 - Champery, Switzerland
The second 2007 UCI World Cup downhill race went down a couple weeks back in Champery, Switzerland. At the end of the day, Finland’s Matti Lehikoinen (G-Cross / Honda) stood at the top of the podium where he was joined by Britain’s Steve Peat (Santa Cruz Syndicate) and Sam Hill (Iron Horse / Monster). While Lehikoinen can be credited with a savvy strategy — he had a relatively poor qualifying run, which gave him an early start time — the real star of the day was Sam Hill. Hill, who qualified first was the last to head down the steep course was forced to ride in conditions that were, by all reports, horrifically muddy. On a day when almost every top qualifier ended in the middle of the pack, Hill was only a second off Lehikoinen’s time and less than a tenth off of Peat’s time.
