Finding a bike that fits your child

Spring is a great time to get your child onto a bike that fits them well. All too often we see kids crammed onto bikes that are too small or placed on top of bikes that are too large; this tendency rarely helps these young-uns actually enjoy what they’re doing because they are concerned about falling onto the pavement, gravel, or dirt instead of forgetting that they’re even on a bike while they’re cruising around the block.

Norco has a full range of kids bikes, with options for little ones who can barely walk and others for pre-teens who are almost ready for a full sized adult bike. Girls’ bikes have the same parts as boys’ bikes although the frames have a more stand-over height to reduce the possibility of serious injury should your little one slip a pedal and come to an awkward stop.

A simple way to gauge whether or not your kids have outgrown their bikes is to compare their riding positions to yours: Are their knees are hitting the handlebars or are the ‘crunched’ up while sitting on the seat (the bike is too small)? Or are they stretched out, reaching for the hand brakes or handlebars and straining to reach the bike’s pedals (the bike is too large)? Typically, kids’ bikes are organized based on the wheel size of the bike — 12″, 16″, 20″, 24″ — a general rule of thumb is that the larger the bike (and kid), the larger the wheel size.

There are a few other techniques that we use to identify proper bike fit for children but these are things that work best in person, where we can work with you and your child to get them onto something that works for them now. Also note that the recommended age group for each bike is entirely subjective and what works for one child might not work for yours. Trying a bike out before you buy it is absolutely recommended.
